How to Tie a BJJ Gi Belt Step by Step
When you walk into the mat at Gracie Barra Calallen for your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class, one of the first things you'll learn is how to properly tie your gi belt. While it might seem simple, tying your BJJ gi belt correctly is essential for safety, comfort, and demonstrating respect for the art and your training partners.
Whether you're a complete beginner or returning to training after time away, this step-by-step guide will show you exactly how to tie your gi belt like a seasoned grappler.
Why Proper Gi Belt Tying Matters
Before diving into the technique, it's worth understanding why tying your gi belt correctly is important. A properly tied belt:
- Keeps your gi secure during training so it doesn't come loose during rolls
- Prevents injury by ensuring your uniform stays in place
- Shows discipline and respect for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tradition
- Ensures comfort so you can focus on learning rather than adjusting your clothing
A loose or improperly tied belt can be distracting during class and may even lead to your gi opening unexpectedly during training.
The Standard BJJ Gi Belt Tying Method
Step 1: Position the Belt Correctly
Start by holding your gi belt with both hands. The belt should be draped across your lap or held in front of you. Make sure there are no twists or kinks in the belt itself. The belt should lie flat and straight before you begin tying.
Step 2: Find the Center of the Belt
Locate the midpoint of your belt by folding it in half. Most practitioners find it helpful to mark or remember where the center is. You'll begin the tying process from this center point. The two ends of the belt should be roughly equal in length when you're ready to start.
Step 3: Wrap the Belt Around Your Waist
With the center of the belt at your navel, wrap the belt around your waist. The belt should go completely around your body, covering your gi jacket. Make sure the belt sits at a comfortable height on your hips—not too high and not too low.
As you wrap, keep the belt relatively flat and smooth. There should be no bunching or twisting. Both ends of the belt should extend outward from your body after wrapping.
Step 4: Cross the Right End Over the Left
Once your belt is wrapped around your waist, take the right end and cross it over the left end, creating an "X" at your waist. This crossing should happen right where the two ends meet on top of your gi.
At this point, you should have the right side of the belt on top, creating a simple overhand knot starting point.
Step 5: Pull the Right End Underneath and Back Across
Now, pull the right end underneath the left end and back across your body from right to left. You're essentially tying a basic overhand knot. Make sure this first knot is snug but not so tight that it restricts your breathing or movement.
Step 6: Tie the Second Knot
Once your first knot is secured, repeat the process for the second knot. Cross the right end over the left again, and pull it underneath and back across. This double-knot system ensures your belt won't come untied during intense training or rolling.
Make sure both knots are even and aligned. They should sit flat against your gi without any protruding loops or awkward angles.
Step 7: Verify Belt Length and Positioning
After tying, check that:
- Both ends of the belt hang to roughly the same length (typically to about knee height)
- The knot sits centered on your front waist
- The belt feels secure but doesn't restrict breathing
- Your gi is properly covered and secured
If one end is significantly longer than the other, you may need to adjust your starting position and retie.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
When learning how to tie a BJJ gi belt step by step, beginners often make a few predictable errors:
Tying Too Loosely – A belt that's too loose will slip during training. You should only be able to fit one or two fingers under the belt when tied properly.
Twisting the Belt – Keep the belt flat throughout the wrapping process. Twisted belts look messy and are more likely to come undone.
Using Only One Knot – Always tie a double knot for security. A single knot is more likely to slip during active rolling.
Wrapping Unevenly – Make sure both sides of the belt are wrapped around your waist with equal tension.
Incorrect Belt Positioning – The belt should sit at waist level, not too high on your chest or too low on your hips.
Practice Makes Perfect
Don't be discouraged if tying your gi belt feels awkward the first few times. Like any new skill in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, it becomes second nature with repetition. Spend a few minutes practicing before class, and soon you'll be able to tie your belt without thinking about it.
